For Equipment and Ag Dealers

Your Side-by-Side Buyer Is Your Multi-Machine Customer

What the data says about the person who owns a UTV, and why they may be the most valuable relationship on your lot.

‍Lahzo Team

When someone buys a side-by-side, most dealers log a recreation sale. The data says you just met your highest-value, multi-machine customer.

We split our 2026 study of 1,100 equipment buyers into the 316 who own a side-by-side and the 784 who do not, then compared them. The side-by-side owner is a different animal.

The finding: the UTV is a signal, not a standalone

78% vs 61%

47% vs 30%

Side-by-side owners vs non-UTV equipment owners. All gaps statistically significant (p<0.01).

They over-index on nearly everything with an engine: zero-turns (53% vs 34%), compact and utility tractors (43% vs 18%), mini excavators (32% vs 13%), skid steers (26% vs 9%), commercial turf (29% vs 9%).

The side-by-side is not the purchase. It is the signal of a fleet.

Why this buyer is different

The UTV is rarely someone's only machine. It is the utility hub of a working property or a business. In share-of-wallet terms, the person who buys it is already spending across the category, or about to, which makes the side-by-side one of the best entry points you have into a multi-year, multi-machine relationship. And the buyer profile backs it up: 72% use equipment for a business or dual-use (versus 43% of other equipment owners), they skew younger (77% under 43), higher-income (47% earn $100K or more), and they are the most finance-ready group we measured (78% very likely to finance, versus 61%).

The trap

Treating the side-by-side as a standalone recreation sale. If the transaction ends when they drive off with the UTV, you have monetized the smallest line item in a relationship that likely includes a tractor, a mower, attachments, parts, and the next machine. Worse, someone else, often a big-box lot, gets the rest.

What to do about it

  • Treat every side-by-side sale as the front door to a fleet. Ask what else they own and what they plan to buy next, and capture it.
  • Cross-merchandise on purpose. Attachments, a tractor, a mower, a parts plan. The intent is already there.
  • Run one relationship across many machines. Unify the customer record so sales, parts, and service see the whole fleet, not one transaction.
  • Lead with financing and bundles. This buyer finances more than any other. Build the accessories and the service plan into the deal.
  • Show up on their channels. They are younger, digital, and AI-ready. They research on video and search and welcome an AI assistant.

One honest note

This is the utility side-by-side owner, drawn from an equipment study, not a survey of pure-recreation ATV or sport buyers. The multi-machine pattern is strongest for the work-and-property UTV. That is exactly the buyer most dealers under-serve.

The takeaway

The multi-machine relationship is only as strong as your ability to stay in it, across every machine, department, and season. That is where an always-on AI Sales Agent earns its place: answering every buyer the moment they ask, so the side-by-side sale becomes the first of many, not the only one.

Based on our 2026 study of 1,100 equipment buyers, comparing side-by-side owners (n=316) with non-UTV equipment owners (n=784). Figures describe buyer characteristics, not any single dealer's traffic.
