Has the Equipment Buyer Changed?

Yes, and faster than anyone in this category planned for. In twelve months the tractor buyer went from open to AI to ready for it. The dealers still building for the analog farmer are now building for a customer who has moved.

THE VISIT

It is 10:40 on a Tuesday night in October. A man who runs 240 acres is at his kitchen table with three dealer websites open. His loader tractor is eleven years old and it cost him two days this harvest.

He knows roughly what he needs. He does not know whether your compact utility handles his loader work, what it runs a month on a five-year term, or whether the program he saw advertised expires before he can move on it.

Your site has a form. He looks at it, closes the tab, and opens the next one. Tomorrow morning nothing about that visit exists. No missed call. No submission. No record that the best-qualified buyer in your market spent nine minutes on your inventory and left.

THE MISREAD

The Industry Decided He Wasn't Ready

Ask most dealers why that visit went nowhere and you get a version of the same answer. He was window shopping. He is older, he does not trust software, he wants to walk the lot and shake a hand. Farmers are analog. If he were serious he would have picked up the phone.

It is a comfortable story because it puts the failure on the buyer. It was already shaky last year. Against this year's data it does not survive at all.

WHAT MOVED

The Buyer Crossed a Line in Twelve Months

Every AI signal in the Lahzo Equipment Research Study moved up YoY, and the one that moved most is the exact behavior a sales agent depends on: whether a buyer engages a chat that openly says it is AI and lets them ask in their own words.

Among commercial operators that preference went from a coin flip to a clear majority. Among consumer buyers it more than doubled, closing most of the gap with commercial. A year ago you could argue the consumer half of your traffic was not there yet. That argument is now gone.

THE REAL OBJECTION

He Didn't Refuse the Tractor. He Refused the Handshake.

Here is the finding that should change your thinking. While AI-readiness surged, contact friction did not budge. Roughly one in three buyers still wants to research without identifying themselves, essentially where it sat last year.

Nothing that stopped the man at the kitchen table was about your equipment, your pricing, or your reputation. He stalled at the exchange. He has given a phone number to a dealership before and he knows what follows: the sequence, the rep who calls during milking. He is not protecting his privacy in the abstract. He is protecting his next two weeks.

That is the durable part of this picture. Openness to AI is rising fast. Willingness to be contacted is not. Those two facts together describe exactly one product: something that answers him fully while he stays anonymous, and asks for his name only when he has a reason to give it.

40%
Worried about privacy and data security.
37%
Hesitant because they expect spam
33%
Want to stay anonymous while researching.

Roughly stable against 2025.

PROOF

What Happens When a Dealer Builds for this Visitor Instead

A current client on the Lahzo Equipment Platform put an AI Sales Agent on their websites and measured the first 90 days. The agent identifies itself, takes questions in the buyer's own words, answers from live inventory and engages conversationally with the prospect.

2.3×
More buyers a month reaching the sales team
+131%
Growth in monthly sales-ready buyers, with no added ad spend or BDC staff
1 in 3
Sales-ready opportunities created entirely outside business hours

One equipment client, first 90 days. Growth rate measured against the pre-deployment monthly form-submission baseline; after-hours share is of sales-ready opportunities.

"Seeing leads like this was a nice surprise. I had no idea that those leads were possible."

THE TAKEAWAY

Stop Asking for the Handshake First

That is the whole change, and it costs nothing to test. Your buyer will have a conversation, he may not fill out your form. Every page that demands identification before it gives information is running the sequence backwards.

One test, tonight, no budget

Open your own website at 10 PM as that buyer. Try to find out what a specific unit costs a month on a five-year term without giving up a phone number. However far you get is how far your best prospect gets. Then count your after-6-PM sessions against your after-6-PM form fills. The gap between those two numbers is the work nobody at your dealership is doing.
